What effect does smoking have on the balance of oxygen & carbon dioxide in the body (lungs, bloodstream)?

Author: I want to know if smoking raises or lowers carbon dioxide relative to oxygen. For example, does smoking a single cigarette raise or lower carbon dioxide? Does it effect the actual ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide? Please – no anti-smoking rants or "smoking is bad for you" generalities – what I need is an answer to this specific question please. Thanks!
